Top Georgia leaders discussed possible gun laws during their "Eggs and Issues" breakfast on Wednesday.

The Georgia General Assembly session began on Monday, and it appears that gun legislation will focus on two areas: school safety and background checks.

Several proposals have been introduced in this year's state legislative session to expand the areas where gun owners can carry their firearms. However, the prospect of passage of those measures is in doubt.

During the breakfast, Gov.Deal expressed support for one measure to allow school administrators to carry guns after receiving training and certification.

"I think the fact that if someone is going to be in an environment around children in particular, they certainly need to be trained.  And I understand the point of view of the author of that legislation and I think it's one that may receive favorable consideration by the General Assembly," said Deal.

The governor also said state legislation will be considered to tighten requirements for checking mental health records when issuing gun permits. Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson (R) said he would consider steps on background checks.

"I think if you are talking about a ban, that is going to be about impossible. If you are talking about doing a thoughtful process on mental health, a thoughtful process on backgrounds that may be possible but I don't think you will see any ban," said Isakson.

Among other state measures, there is one that would allow permitted gun holders to carry weapons on college campuses. It's unclear whether legislative leaders will allow the bills to move forward.
