Mesa police officer seriously injured in crash

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

A Mesa police officer was involved in a crash near Main Street and Sossaman Tuesday morning.

Authorities say the officer was headed east on Main Street when the driver of the van pulled out in front of her about 7:15 a.m.

The officer was not responding to a call and was engaged in routine driving when the accident occurred, Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato stated.

The van's driver, only identified as someone in their 80s, was ejected from the vehicle. That person was not wearing a seatbelt and died from their injuries at the scene.

The 49-year-old female officer was extricated from her vehicle and transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. She was identified as Officer Helen Simmons, a 23-year veteran of the force.

Simmons will be kept overnight at the hospital for observation.

Since the accident occurred in a county island, police say the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation into the fatal crash. Impairment does not appear to be an issue.

Investigators have not released the van driver's name.
