ATLANTA -

It's a New Year, and for many people, it's time to start working on that New Year's resolution to lose weight.  If you're out to pick a gym, you need to make sure you don't start off 2013 by making a big mistake.

Losing weight is really about making a lifestyle choice, so you don't want to get tripped up in the beginning by joining a gym that's not right for you.  And besides that, joining a gym is a big financial commitment, so you want to make sure you get it right.

With the help of the Atlanta Better Business Bureau, we've got a to-do list for you:

1) Decide what your fitness goals are.  Are you aiming to get in tip-top shape, or maybe just shed 15 pounds.  One might require a gym, but maybe you just need to start walking in the evenings—which is free!

2)  If you decide to join a health club, visit it.  Is it close enough where you'll really go?  Is there enough equipment for the time of day you'll be there?  Most gyms will give you a one-day pass so you can check it out.  If you think your gym time will be at 6 p.m., then try it out at 6 p.m.

3) Consider your budget.  You might be able to afford the monthly fee, but don't forget to add in start-up fees.  And what if you need to break the contract?  What will that cost?

4) Read the contract—every last word of it.

5)  Check with the Better Business Bureau to see what they have to say about the gym.

As always, if you have a considerable amount of weight to lose, your doctor's office should be your first stop.  Make sure you have his or her okay before starting a weight loss program.
