Brooklyn man gets prison for fatally torching woman in elevator

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

A handyman who admitted burning a 73-year-old woman to death in a Brooklyn elevator will spend 50 years to life in prison.

District Attorney Charles J. Hynes announced the sentence Friday for Jerome Isaac.

Isaac pleaded guilty to murder. His sentencing was postponed from November while his mental fitness was gauged. He told probation officials he got orders from the devil.

Prosecutors said Isaac attacked Deloris Gillespie because he believed she owed him money. They say he doused her with gasoline, set her on fire and then threw a firebomb inside the elevator.
