Living Nightmare: Overbrook Woman Says Home Smells Like Sewer

An Overbrook woman says the sewer-like smell inside of her home has made her life a living nightmare.

The woman, Burnell Blaylock, says the source of the smell is from a sewage problem at another property, but the owner is nowhere to be found.

"It's horrible, some days are worse than others," Blaylock told FOX 29's Stephanie Salvatore.

Blaylock and her sister say they're dealing with a pungent, lingering stench throughout the entire home. The two have lived with the nightmare now for seven months. Before that, Blaylock says she hadn't noticed any problems in her home in nearly 50 years.

"In the morning, I open up the windows and start spraying air fresheners all over the house everyday."

A plastic sheet has been hung in the living room just to try to keep the smell from coming upstairs.

In the basement, Blaylock says she pours Pine Sol and water down the drains to help combat the smell.

Complaints of the smell brought Philadelphia's Licenses and Inspections Department out to the property several times since last summer, which resulted in a violation written for the sewage drain, but so far Blaylock and her sister haven't been able to get much more help.

FOX 29 has learned the next inspection isn't scheduled until February 14. We spoke with L&I to try to get workers to visit the property sooner.

As for the owner of the other property, our calls to the rental office went unanswered and no one was home at the listed address.
