PHOENIX -

Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputy Ruben Garcia is still clinging to life two days after being shot in the line of duty.

Garcia remains in critical but stable condition. He was shot late Monday night while conducting a traffic stop on a suicidal man, identified as Donald Miller Sr.

Garcia was shot multiple times and fell to the ground.

Wednesday, his brother talked for the first time about what the family has been going through the past few days.

"The camaraderie and fellowship we've witnessed has touched us and moved us, my family felt compelled that we give a statement on behalf of my brother," said Alifonzo Garcia, Ruben's brother.

"Until today we've never really took in mind the risk my brother has gone through and all our fellow officers that work with him."

It's not clear where on his body Ruben Garcia was shot.

"My understanding is the physicians have sedated him to do the procedures they need to, he is in the intensive care unit at this time," says Chris Hegstrom, spokesman for MCSO.

"I don't in medical terms, but I can tell you my brother is progressing in a favorable way, and we're extremely pleased in the progress that he's showing," said Alifonzo.

Miller died of gunshot wounds, but it's not known if they were self-inflicted or return fire from officers.

Peoria Police are handling the investigation.
