Guns and ammunition are top sellers right now in the valley. People are clamoring to valley pawn shops to purchase firearms.
This pawn shop owner says his shelves are looking bare.
Wayne Wynn has sold more ammo and more guns here at Route 66 Pawn Shop in Mesa this month than in the past six months.
"Mainly what we have left are hunting-type rifles."
Wynn says recent shootings making headlines, like the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, have scared valley customers in two ways. They want to protect themselves, but they are also concerned the government will impose new gun control laws.
"Everybody trying to buy assault type rifles… AR's and AK's type rifles. They are afraid of what's going to happen," says Wayne Wynn.
In Wynn's shop, there are no more high capacity rifles, they've all been sold. Wynn says there is actually a backorder on background checks. It might take a customer at least three to four days to walk away with a gun, which tells him nationally gun sales are on the rise.
"They're just scared. People are scared."
While at first people clamored for the high powered high capacity weapons, now folks are buying handguns, rifles and shotguns.
"Any gun. Right now it's any gun."
Wynn is confident folks here in the west will not give up their 2nd Amendment rights easily.
"Texas, Arizona, I don't think it's going to happen. I think they are in for a fight," says Wynn.
