Man falls in street, hit by car in north Phoenix

Posted: Updated:

Union Hills is closed between 19th Ave and 21st Ave after a pedestrian was hit by a car Monday night.

A man in his 50s stumbled and fell while crossing the street. Several cars driving westbound on Union Hills were able to swerve to avoid him, but he was struck by a black passenger car.

The man had been inside Fry's and was asked to leave because he was acting strangely. When he crossed the street he was not in a crosswalk and we're told his injuries are very severe.

"[A witness] said that strangely he fell down and didn't really get up immediately," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Mike Long. "There were some vehicles traveling westbound in the middle lane, the lead vehicle swerved to avoid him, and the vehicle behind him struck him, didn't have time to avoid him."

The area is expected to be closed for some time. Police say the man may not survive.

Officers are reminding people not to jaywalk, especially at night.
