Girl Petitions Archdiocese, Fights For Right To Play Football

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Who says girls can't play the same sports as boys? That's what the Catholic Youth Organization told one Bucks County girl. But now her family is fighting back.

Caroline Pla, 11, has played football since she was 5-years-old.

In 2011, she played with the Romans' squad in a Bucks County league run by the Philadelphia CYO. But then an opposing team reported her.

Now, she can't suit up with the rest of her teammates.

Pla says she wants to keep playing and her mom started a petition to get the archdiocese to changes its "boys-only" rule.

They've gotten more than 7,000 supporters.

In a statement, the CYO says the decision was based on a policy that football is a full-contact sport designated for boys.

The archdiocese says the policy is under review.

FOX 29's Karen Hepp has more details in this video report.
