Police say that the officer that was struck by a motorist late Friday night is improving and may be moved out of the ICU sometime early next week.
Atlanta Police Officer Osbert Beckles was still in the Intensive Care Unit at Grady Memorial Hospital Sunday evening. A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department told FOX 5 News that they expect him to be moved to a regular room in the next few days.
A spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol says Officer Beckles was working traffic near the Northside Parkway ramp for Interstate 75 when a 2011 Hyundai Sonata slammed into his patrol car.
They say Scott Eugene Welker, 45, was drunk behind the wheel of that car. He has been charged with driving under the influence and was being held at the Fulton County Jail on $58,000.
During his first appearance Saturday, it was revealed Welker was on Federal probation. He was still in the Fulton County Jail as of Sunday evening.
Atlanta police said on Wednesday that Beckles continues to recover and is in good spirits.
