Crews rescue deer from ice in Waltham - DC News FOX 5 DC WTTG

Deer rescued from Waltham reservoir put down

WALTHAM, Mass. ( -- A deer that rescue crews spent Friday morning pulling from a Waltham reservoir has been put down.

The deer became trapped on a patch of ice just off shore at Cambridge Reservoir. Video from Skyfox initially showed it struggling to stand up and continually falling back down on the ice before crews got to the scene.

When crews arrived they sent a rescue sled to the opposite side of the reservoir and worked their way toward the deer.

After some time, two rescuers managed to reach it and get a lasso around its neck. Crews were able to get a bag over its head and attempted to secure the animal's legs.

The deer continually kicked and attempted to pull away from rescuers, even shedding the bag. Eventually the rescuers were able to subdue it by sitting on it and tying its legs.

Loading the heavy animal onto a rescue sled proved to be a challenge on the slippery ice. The rescuers spent some time trying to rock the deer onto the sled. Eventually they were successful and other rescue workers on land pulled the sled to safety.

The deer was taken to Grafton.

Just after 3:30 p.m. on Friday Fox 25 had heard the deer had been put down due to complications from rescue myopathy and hypothermia.

SkyFox also captured another deer on the ice a short distance away. Animal Rescue league officials said that deer had died as well.
