DETROIT (WJBK) -- The group Mothers of Murdered Children knows the numbers all too well and the very real impact they have as they help people get through the violent deaths of their loved ones.
"It's hard for a youngster to grow up in the city of Detroit in these times right here. They may not make it to the age of 18," said Jalal Malik-Ikram.
The victims' faces now just photos, so many mothers and loved ones in mourning, so many crimes still unsolved.
"We listen to over a thousand grieving mothers, so it's perilous times right now," Malik-Ikram said.
And at Mothers of Murdered Children, they're well aware the numbers have names.
"The numbers now are 411 and that means that they're getting higher and higher, and that just gives us a constant problem with our youths today because most of these are youth related murders," said Malik-Ikram.
He is calling on Mayor Dave Bing to make more and better policing his top priority, not city finances, but city safety.
"The mayor's job is to really get a fully manned police department in order."
If not, he fears there won't be anything left to save. Parents, pastors, the community must come together, but most important, he said the police.
"The preservation of life is first, and if everyone is getting killed, then what good is the city."
