Complaints On Social Media About Mummers' Use Of Blackface

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Some of those sequined and feathered Mummers' costumes are causing quite a controversy on the Internet.

People are accusing some of the Mummers of being racist.

They are complaining on social media about some Mummers depicting Native Americans and that they use blackface in the parade.

One of the performances from Tuesday's parade, by the Venetian New Year's Association, was called, "Indi-insourcing." Thousands of tweets went out talking about it.

The wearing of blackface paint was once a part of the parade. But in 1964, city policy officially ruled it out.

Some groups still wear it, saying it is a tradition.
