NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD says a man being arrested for trying to get into the subway without paying attempted to choke an arresting officer.

Police arrested Daniel Walker, 19, of Lenox Ave. on several charges after the attack on Monday morning.

Police say that Walker had tried to jump the turnstile at the 8th Ave. and 42nd Street station.  An officer at the station saw it and moved in.

Walker is alleged to have resisted arrest and was found to be on top of the arresting officer and choking him when back-up arrived.

The officer was taken to Cornell Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Walker was eventually arrested.  He faces assault, theft of service, resisting arrest and criminal trespass charges.  It was unclear when he was to be arraigned and if he had a lawyer.

The NYPD did not release the name of the wounded officer.
