Osprey shot in both wings, recovering at Busch Gardens

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Calista Bodimer is used to seeing nature's beauty from her own backyard.

"We've seen dolphins and manatees," the 13-year-old said.

But as she and her family were packing away Christmas decorations, she noticed something unusual.

"I said we have to get him out of the water or he is going to drown," said Bodimer.

An Osprey that appeared to be injured was flapping in the canal behind her home.

Calista quickly grabbed her dad for help.

John Bodimer knew he had to get the bird out of the water right away before things went from bad to worse.

"I said, ‘We need to call somebody,' and I was thinking getting somebody on a boat," he said.

That's where neighbor Jessica Silk paddled into the picture.

The 16-year-old jumped in her kayak and swooped the endangered bird to safety.

A member of the Clearwater Audubon Society picked up the bird, and it's now being treated at Busch Gardens.

It turns out the Osprey has been shot by a BB pellet at close range, and it's not the first time this has happened.

In the past two months, several Osprey have been shot around the Bay area, including this one that had both of its wings shot.

As for Calista, she can't imagine who would want to hurt these beautiful birds. She's just glad she was there to answered nature's call.

"It makes me happy that we were able to save one of them so that he didn't die, but it makes me feel bad to know that it's something that's not that uncommon," she said.
