NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Suffolk County police say a woman has been charged with cruelty to animals after she abandoned two severely ill pit bull puppies.

21-year-old Swaneka Danzler of Amityville told the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that she dumped the puppies into a six-foot well outside of Riverhead Animal Hospital around 1:00 a.m. December 18.

The SPCA said the puppies, one male and one female, had severe mange, a skin disease caused by several species of tiny mites, and were near death. The dogs also had such severe mange that the male puppy's skin was peeling off.

The female puppy died a short time later.

SPCA Chief Roy Gross called the dumping of the puppies "a blatant act of cruelty and abandonment."
