Americans banned from adopting Russian kids, The Cradle relays heartbreak

EVANSTON, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

President Vladimir Putin signed a bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children Friday. The law could reportedly go into effect on Jan. 1.

The Cradle Adoption Agency in Evanston is just one of countless adoption agencies across the country that could have the task of relaying heartbreaking news to families scheduled to adopt a child from Russia.

The new adoption mandate banning Americans from adopting children from Russia is reportedly in response to America's position on reported human rights violations in Russia. President Obama recently signed a measure that calls for sanctions against them.

A reported 46 children scheduled for adoption by Americans could remain in Russia when the law goes into effect. UNICEF estimates there are about 740,000 children not in parental custody in Russia, and only about 18,000 Russians waiting to adopt.

The Cradle Adoption Agency in Evanston has been around since 1923. The Cradle says the organization has placed more than 14,000 children in permanent homes. The agency says it is the only adoption agency in the country with an on-site nursery.
