Christmas gifts for children on the Rockaways

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The children of P.S. 253 in the Rockaways received an unexpected Christmas surprise. The holiday joy was deeply appreciated by students, many from families still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

State Sen. Malcolm Smith played the role of Santa Claus. Since the storm he has worked with Hot 97 identifying families in need.

Sue Sudovar helped collect most of these gifts. We first told you about this Good Samaritan and her friend last month. They started their drive after noticing so many toys among the debris of the superstorm.

We were with her as she made last rounds at several collection spots around the tristate, filling up a rented van with gifts -- a sleigh that would make Santa proud.
