WASHINGTON -

Allen Sessoms has been fired as president of the University of the District of Columbia. The school's Board of Trustees voted to terminate the contract of Sessoms after a four-hour closed-door meeting Wednesday night.

"We thank Dr. Sessoms for his work in guiding the University over the past four years," said Trustee Dr. Elaine Crider, who chairs the board. "But as we grapple with the challenges of reducing staff and programs, continuing to improve our physical plant and attracting new students, the Board has decided to go in a different direction."

In 2009, Sessoms reorganized UDC, creating a separate two-year community college and raising tuition and admission standards for four-year students.

The university will name a temporary replacement within 48 hours. The board has also begun interviewing candidates to serve as interim president, who will be chosen by mid-January.

Sessoms took over as the school's president in September, 2008, after serving as president of Delaware State University and Queens College of New York City.

The Board of Trustees and Sessoms have been under fire from many critics who said D.C. taxpayers are paying too much to keep the university afloat. Sessoms was forced to answer questions last year when FOX 5 exposed some expensive business trips and job perks.

STATEMENT: The Board of Trustees of the University of the District of Columbia has decided to terminate the contract of University President, Dr. Allen L. Sessoms.

Dr. Sessoms took the helm on September, 1, 2008 after having served as president of Delaware State University and Queens College of New York City. During his tenure, the University embarked on a significant upgrade in campus facilities and developed a comprehensive University strategic plan for academic, administrative and operational reform.

A temporary replacement will be named within 48 hours. The Board has also begun interviewing candidates to serve as Interim President, who will be chosen by mid-January 2013. The Interim President would serve approximately six to 18 months during a national search for a permanent replacement.
