DETROIT (WJBK) -- If you're like me, the mall is the last place I want to be right now. If you're looking for great gifts without all the hassle, why not shop local. Detroit has a lot of options.
"We found that nearly one in three dollars that Detroit residents spend on retail leaves the city. That adds up to $1.5 billion a year," said Michael Forsyth with the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation.
Detroit small businesses are reclaiming a piece of the pie.
"The street side boutiques are back," said Ty Haygood with the Flag Ship Boutique.
They're booming in neighborhoods throughout the city. At Midtown's Spiral Collective you'll find plenty of cool t-shirts, books and stocking stuffers.
If you're looking for a great quality hat, downtown Detroit's Henry the Hatter is a great stop.
If you're really searching for something off the beaten path, check out the stores on the Livernois Avenue of Fashion between Seven and Eight Mile. University Commons has been working to secure grants to help entrepreneurs update their store fronts and it's paying off.
"The perfect gift... as far as clothing is something something versatile," said David Gordon.
You'll find that at his store -- Time Square.
"With a blazer you always can wear with the slack, dress it up, shirt or tie, or if not, you can always put it with the jeans," he said.
If you're shopping for the more casual guy on your Christmas list, check out the Flag Ship Boutique.
"The D-81 cardigan... and the new Joe's Coney Island cardigan, these two pieces are only sold here at the Flag Ship Botique," Haygood said.
"One of the draws for people coming in here is that it's affordable, it's unique, and most of our pieces are one of a kind," said Jacquelyn Terry from the Style Gallery.
A lot of what you'll find inside the Style Gallery is made in Detroit.
"It's great to shop local this season," Forsyth said.
The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation has put together a great list of shopping options all over the city. You can find it at www.degc.org.
