Prince George's County police say a 25-year-old man was fatally shot as he held a 2-year-old boy, and the boy was shot in the arm.

Police say they believe the adult victim, Nicoh Mayhew, was targeted. The toddler's injuries are not life-threatening.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Monday at a garden-style apartment building in Seat Pleasant.

Police say Mayhew was walking into his apartment building where he lived with his mother and son. As he was heading into his apartment while holding his son, police say he was immediately attacked by two gunmen.

Minutes after homicide detectives wrapped up their investigation and left the scene, Cynthia Jenkins Mayhew, the victim's mother who was home at the time, stood before the bullet-riddled doorway of her apartment and described what she heard and saw.

"I just heard gunshots, and when they stopped, I heard the baby crying, and I just opened the door and reached out and grabbed my grandson into the house," said the victim's mother. "But my son was dead."

Cynthia says her grandson is going to be okay, but she's devastated by the loss of her son. She has no idea why these gunmen wanted him dead.

"Nicoh was a loving person," she said. "He was a good person and I will miss him. I can't believe they took my child."

Police spent several hours processing the crime scene. They towed away two cars, a Hyundai wagon and a Kia sedan.

Nicoh Mayhew's murder came as county police held a news conference publicizing a significant drop in violent crime.

As Mayhew's body was removed from the scene, family and friends stood outside the crime scene wiping away tears.

Police say the gunmen got away in a dark-colored BMW with tinted windows.
