Former D.C. Council Chairman Kwame BrownThe U.S. Attorney's Office says it has concluded its criminal investigation of former D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown's 2008 campaign.
U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen issued a statement about the investigation after Brown's brother, Che Brown, pleaded guilty to bank fraud Thursday.
Machen's office began investigating the Browns after local officials found irregularities in Kwame Brown's campaign finance reports. Kwame Brown pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor campaign finance violation related to a side account that was controlled by his brother.
Both Browns also pleaded guilty to felony bank fraud. Those charges were unrelated to the campaign finance allegations.
Machen says civil penalties may be appropriate in the campaign finance matter and is asking the District of Columbia Board of Elections to take it up again.
