NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a New York City sergeant who was photographed posing with President Barack Obama at a ground zero ceremony has died from an apparent suicide.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement that Sgt. Stephanie Moses "epitomized professionalism in her appearance, conduct and dedication to duty. "

He said her death was a great loss to the department.

Kelly told reporters that she appeared to have taken her own life on Tuesday at her Baldwin, Long Island, home.

He said the 40-year-old Moses was on many occasions "the face of the NYPD on the national stage as well as routinely at police ceremonies."

She was photographed with Obama in May 2011 during a 9/11 memorial wreath laying ceremony.
