Church wants to give away historical home in Social Circle

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. -

A church is looking to give away a history pre-Civil War home in Social Circle. The First Baptist Church of Social Circle wants to expand, but doesn't want the house.

The home located on 221 North Cherokee, was built before the Civil War and has stood the test of time.

"This is known as kind of a cottage Victorian architecture home, and they have unique things about them inside and out," said Tom Brown of the Historic Perseveration Commission.

The church estimates that it would cost about $10,000 to demolish the three-bedroom, two bath home, which has hardwood floors and three fireplaces.

"It is a nice house, but it's not a facility that the church can continue to use," said Johnny Pickens of First Baptist Church of Social Church.

The church would rather not see it destroyed, so they are offering $10,000 to whoever wants the house to help with the move.

Pickens admits it will be a major undertaking and said it would take about 3 months to move the old house.

"It has to be cut in half. The roof has to be taken off of it, so it's a major, major operation,"  Johnny Pickens. "It'll  probably take at least $50,000 to get this house off this property."

Pickens said it would cost another $50,000 to put it back together. Brown said the historical value of the home wouldn't be reduced with the move.

The local historic preservation society says they will chip in another $10,000 to whomever takes the house if it is moved to another location in Social Circle.
