NYC celebrates the start of Hanukkah

MYFOXNY.COM -

Hundreds of people, including rabbis and dignitaries, will celebrate beginning of Hanukkah with the ceremonial lighting of a 32-foot menorah Saturday night at the edge of Central Park.

The ceremony will take place at plaza on Fifth Avenue near the Central Park's southeast corner.

The annual steel menorah weighs about 4,000 pounds and stands so tall that organizers need an electric utility crane and to reach the top. The menorah has real oil lamps, protected from the wind by glass chimneys.

Senator Charles Schumer and Rabbi Schmuel Butman of the Lubavitch Youth Organization are some of the dignitaries who will on hand to light the first lamp.

The eight-day Jewish holiday celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
