New Law Prohibits Discrimination Against Breastfeeding in the Workplace

Posted: Updated:

California's new law prohibiting discrimination against breastfeeding mothers adds teeth to existing law requiring employers to give lactation breaks in a private place.

Although communication about the issue can be difficult – people are afraid to use the term "breast" in the workplace – this is an opportunity for employers to stand out as supporting working mothers and attract and retain them.

For example, by having a spacious lactation room with comfortable chairs and a refrigerator for expressed milk.  Under the new law, employers should also have a policy and treat complaints about breast-feeding like any other discrimination complaint.
