Palmdale Man Arrested For Allegedly Crashing Car Into Tot

Posted: Updated:

LANCASTER (CNS) - A Palmdale man was in custody today on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter after allegedly crashing the car he was driving into another vehicle while being chased by deputies in Lancaster, killing a 2-year-old girl and seriously injuring her mother.

Marvin Travon Hicks, 43, was being held on $1 million bail, according to the sheriff's department.

The woman was hospitalized in serious condition after the blue Lexus in which she was traveling with her toddler was struck by the man's black Toyota at the intersection of Avenue I and 10th Street West about 4:55 p.m. Thursday, according to Sgt. Paul Pfrehm of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Lancaster Station.

The girl, who died at a hospital, was identified as Madison Ruano of Lancaster, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Her mother's name was not released.

Pfrehm said the suspect was first seen by deputies when he ran a red light on Sierra Highway, just minutes before the fatal collision.
"A sheriff's unit initiated a brief pursuit after seeing the vehicle
being driven recklessly at a high rate of speed," Pfrehm said. "The suspect
continued northbound on Sierra Highway running red-lighted traffic signals."
The man refused to stop for deputies and instead drove his car at around
100 miles per hour, at times heading the wrong way, according to the
sheriff's department. He was driving west on Avenue I when he struck the Lexus
as it headed north on 10th Street West, Pfrehm said.
The girl, her mother and the suspect were taken by ambulance to a
hospital, Pfrehm said
It was not immediately clear if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the
collision, he said.
Anyone with information on the collision was asked to call traffic
investigators at (661) 948-8466.
