Veterans' Career Expo Held On Pearl Harbor Day

PHILADELPHIA -

December 7th, 1941, is of course "a date which will live in infamy." Seventy-one years ago today, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, drawing the United States into World War II.

The assault on the Hawaiian naval base left almost 2,400 Americans dead and over 1,200 wounded. President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan one day later.

On a day of remembrance for those in the military, it's worth noting that today's fighting men and women face a daunting challenge when they return to civilian life.

While the jobless rate for all adults is now below 8 percent, unemployment for military veterans is consistently higher. For post-9/11 vets, it's 10 percent!

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon spent the day with veterans looking for jobs in a still-sluggish economy.

The "Be a Hero, Hire a Hero" career fair was held Friday afternoon at the National Constitution Center.

A companion seminar offered advice on how to translate military experience to the civilian world and how to make sure that experience grabs the boss' attention.

Here at FOX 29, we're helping heroes get back on their feet. If you or a veteran you know needs help finding a job, come to MyFOXPhilly.com and scroll down to the "HelpingHeroesWork.com" link on our homepage.
