Thieves Steal Valuables From Unlocked Cars In Chester County

Posted: Updated:
TREDYFFRIN, Pa. -

Residents and drivers in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County have been a bit uneasy this week after some thieves started stealing valuable items from cars in two different neighborhoods.

"I think people need to be aware that they live in a world that is not as kind as it used to be," said one neighbor in a development where the thieves have struck several times.

"I try to keep my doors locked as much as I can," another driver added.

Police say the thieves rolled into the Daylesford Lakes and Chesterbrook developments Tuesday and Wednesday. They entered several unlocked cars in the overnight hours while neighbors slept.

They made off with gps units, laptops, cell phones, Ipods, cash and credit cards. The total take on this local crime spree is unknown.

"The car was unlocked, and unfortunately she locked the glove compartment so they broke into that," said one driver, who knew two of the victims of these thefts.

"Leaving something in the car, I'd say I've been guilty of that before, leaving a lap top, you gotta bring your laptop home from work every day so I've been guilty of that before. So maybe it's something I've gotta watch out for," Carter Young said.

Ben Schuster lives in Daylesford Lakes, he's a one time resident of Philadelphia. He says you've got to keep your eyes open.

"It's not just here. We lived in Philadelphia, we lived in Texas. You have to have the same carefulness wherever you live," he explained.

"You've just gotta keep on your edge," said one driver.

Township investigators refused to release any details on the thefts or specifics on where they occurred, but neighbors have been alerted. With the holiday season in full swing, it's driver beware.

"It's around the holidays, it's going to happen," a driver in a local shopping center said.

"Always lock the car, just out of habit," another added.

"I think when doors are unlocked, it's opportunities at any time of the year," Schuster said.

Police officials were unavailable for comment on Friday.

It was quite a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday.  That mild and humid air mass will feul afternoon thunderstorms.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
