Atlanta's Archbishop Wilton Gregory sent a message to state and national lawmakers on Monday that the nation's Catholic bishops want comprehensive immigration reform.
The Roman Catholic leader spoke at the opening dinner for a conference on immigration reform being held in Atlanta this week.
The Archbishop said the bishops would resist efforts to give undocumented people legal status without the opportunity to become U.S. citizens.
"We will argue against the creation of a permanent underclass in this country, where certain parts of our population do not have the rights that others do. Our nation has been down this road before with disastrous results," said Gregory.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Legal Immigration Network are sponsoring the national conference.
