With 55-degree high, what season is it anyway?

Posted: Updated:

After the temperature topped 50 degrees, it seems everyone is talking about the weather and wondering when winter will arrive.

The sun finally burned through the clouds over the metro by mid-afternoon, and that had many Minnesotans rushing outdoors to sample what may be the final taste of fall.

On the University of St. Thomas campus, it wasn't just the December temperatures that were soaring -- so were the Frisbees.

"We just decided to come out and throw around while we still could," said Mike Johnson. "Don't get to throw around outside in December -- too rare."

Johnson and his Ultimate Frisbee teammates would normally be inside a gymnasium, but Monday was a day for shorts and T-shirts in the fresh air.

A similar dress code was seen at the outdoor ice rink at Landmark Plaza -- and Eric Kirchoff told FOX 9 News he didn't know what to make of the warm weather, but he and the other skaters had to find a way to navigate their way through some fairly deep puddles.

Minnesota wasn't the only state to see unseasonably warm weather. Virtually the entire country saw the thermometer spike well above average highs -- but don't get too comfortable. There's a chance for accumulating snow this weekend.

Most rinks will need several days of below-freezing temperatures before flooding can begin. In Minneapolis, officials hope that will happen before the winter break for schools.
