WASHINGTON -
Metro says the long-awaited new escalators at the busy Dupont Circle station have experienced 20 outages in their first 40 days.
The escalators opened Oct. 20 after a nearly 9-month closure of the station's southern entrance.
But The Washington Examiner (http://tinyurl.com/bov6vvn) reports that they've experienced multiple shutdowns of varying lengths. For example, on Oct. 30, two of the three new escalators didn't work, leaving riders to walk up a single 188-foot staircase.
Metro spokesman Philip Stewart says "the escalators are functioning as intended." He says they are "many times more reliable than the units they replaced."
