Text messaging is 20 years old

Posted: Updated:

December 3rd is a mobile phone milestone. It's almost hard to believe but the first text message was sent 20 years ago on December 3rd 1992!

British engineer Neil Papworth was just 22 when he sent the first ever SMS or short messaging service from his computer to a friend's cell phone.

Of course now it's hard to image a day without texting but two decades ago Papworth says he didn't realize it would catch on.

In case you're wondering, the first message read "Merry Christmas".

Can you imagine living without texting now days? How many times a day do you text?
