How early is too early to tailgate? If you ask the fans who parked themselves outside the Georgia Dome on Thursday night, the answer is never. They weren't there for the Falcons game. They're very, very early for Saturday's big SEC Championship match up.
Many are calling this the biggest game in 30 years for the Georgia Bulldogs, and the first tailgaters wasted no time setting up camp. By the time the Saints and Falcons kicked off inside the Dome, there were about a dozen RVs decked out in red and black already situated in the back of the parking lot.
Take Dave Staebell, for instance. He calls his $300,000 RV "the condo on wheels." He parked it in the Georgia Dome lot on Thursday afternoon, and says he plans to do nothing but relax between now and kickoff. And why not? His RV is well-equipped, with a full kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom—even a washer and dryer. Staebell will miss one thing, however: his son's state championship football game on Saturday morning.
Joe Cahn was also there with his RV—and his cat, Sophie. Cahn calls himself the commissioner of tailgating, and he says it's not just about the parking lot, but also the journey. In fact, he travels the country in his RV.
"Started in 1996 when I went to every stadium in the NFL," he said. "Since then I've been to about 890 games, over 800,000 miles."
Cahn says this could be his biggest football weekend yet, thanks to a healthy dose of southern hospitality.
