The sign outside Sanders Corner Elementary School in Ashburn says "have a safe and happy Thanksgiving."
It was anything but that for Principal Kathleen Hwang who was killed by a teen driver on Thanksgiving eve.
Police say she wasn't in the crosswalk when she stepped off the curb on White Water Drive near her home in Sterling just after three in the afternoon on Thanksgiving Eve.
So far, no charges have been filed.
A steady stream of students, past and present, have been stopping by a growing memorial for Hwang outside the school.
"She was an angel and she will be greatly missed," parent Bruce Nowzari says.
One of the notes at the memorial called Hwang, "the best principal ever." Another student wrote, she would "miss and remember her forever."
Felicia and Elmo Green have known Hwang for six years. Both of their sons have gone to school at Sanders Corner.
"She's truly been an absolute blessing for our family," says Elmo Green. "I don't know how my boys would have made it through school without her support and guidance."
Grief counselors will be at the school on Monday for students and staff who need help dealing with the loss.
"As hard as it's going to be the first day, I hope we can soon celebrate her life," Green says.
Hwang had announced plans to retire at the end of the school year.
