Blackhawks fans let down after NHL cancels more games

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

More bad news for Blackhawks fans, as the NHL has canceled another two weeks of the regular season, plus the All-Star game.

They made the cancellations because of the player's lockout that is now threatening to wipe out the entire season.

It's yet another body check to faithful Blackhawks fans, who were hoping to see some cold steel on ice before Christmas and now some are beginning to lose hope that they'll see any NHL action at all this year.

It broke our hearts to break the news to Teresa Lawhead, as she marched down Michigan Avenue proudly wearing her Marion Hossa jersey.

"I did not hear that but I did hear the winter classic was canceled," Lawhead said in response to the news. "So, I'm not happy. I'm sure nobody is."

On this very same spot just two and a half years ago, thousands of fans celebrated the Blackhawks first Stanley Cup in half a century. Chicago was hockey-crazy.

But now the only smile you'll find around the United Center is the one fixed in bronze on the statue of the golden jet.

"Very disappointed. Very disappointed," fan Ben Felton said about the continued lockout. "Like to see some good hockey on TV and it's just not going to happen this year."

The NHL has now canceled a little more than a third of its scheduled season. Owners locked out the players in September when the previous labor agreement expired with the two sides at odds over how to split $3.3 billion in revenue. But, players and owners aren't the only ones losing money.

At the Billy Goats on West Madison, just blocks from the United Center, the dining room has been mostly empty.

The only pucks you'll find are the ones sizzling on the grill.

"There's absolutely no business. If there's no hawks game the regular customers come in, but when the hawks are in town the place is crazy. It's jam-packed," says bartender Jack Hanrahan.

"Living here in Chicago, we're such a hockey city," says Blackhawks fan John Gaspari. "It's kind of disheartening that we don't get to see our boys play."

Business also seemed slow at the Blackhawks store on North Michigan Avenue. Fans are crossing their fingers negotiations will heat up in time to salvage the season, but worry it's already too late.

"At this point, what's the point? Says Lawhead. "It would be ridiculous to have a 42 game season."

"I think there's enough blame to go around both sides," says Mark Hampson. "Owners don't want to pay. Players want more money. Same old story."
