Transportation officials are adding new lane markings extending more than a mile ahead of new express lanes on the Capital Beltway after a spate of accidents were reported soon after the lanes opened.
New markers were added Tuesday morning to help minimize unsafe lane changes at the entrance to the express lanes. Additional markers will be added to the pavement in the coming days to remind drivers they need an E-ZPass to use the lanes.
Police say every crash has occurred near the entrance to the northbound express lanes between Springfield and Braddock Road.
Tolls on the lanes vary based on the amount of traffic. Drivers must use an E-Z Pass to use the lanes. Carpools of three or more are exempt from the tolls with a special E-ZPass.
