Posted: Updated:

A Gaithersburg man is facing some serious charges, after firing an assault rifle in his backyard.

It happened in the 17800 block of Washington Grove Lane just before noon, as a nearby church was letting out. Parishioners and neighbors heard multiple shots and scrambled for cover.

Montgomery County Police say they received numerous emergency calls from scared witnesses.

"When officers arrived they found a 38 year old subject. He admitted to firing a weapon in his backyard. His home was searched and four firearms were recovered, including the AK 47 that he had discharged." Captain Paul Starks of Montgomery County Police says.

Investigators say one of the other weapons found in the home was a loaded handgun. Another handgun and shotgun were also recovered. Kenneth Wayne Barney, Jr. was taken into custody

"Right now there's nothing to indicate that he obtained the weapons illegally, but our firearms investigative unit is working the case." Starks says.

Barney, Jr is being held on $20,000 bond and is now facing charges of firing a gun in an urban area, and reckless endangerment.
