Conn. principal proposes dues to halt fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) - A school official in Connecticut is proposing $15-a-year student dues to consolidate some charitable giving and limit numerous fundraisers competing for money.

The Westerly Sun reports that Christopher Sandford, principal of Wheeler Middle-High School in North Stonington, told the Board of Education on Wednesday that a small group of students and parents typically support many fundraisers while everyone else reaps the benefits.

The dues would not be mandatory because state law does not permit it. But students who do not contribute would have to pay the full price of senior activities, such as the prom, instead of the subsidized price.

Board of Education members generally supported the proposal, with some suggesting higher dues of $20 or $25 a year. An official vote has not been set.
