Superstorm Sandy

Return to Seaside Heights

The Seaside Heights, N.J., boardwalk is all gone after being decimated by Hurricane Sandy. Just this week, residents and business owners were allowed back to the peninsula for the first time since the storm.

From the north end where TV show "Jersey Shore" was taped stretching 16 blocks south, the boardwalk is battered and broken. At the end of the Casino Pier, the famed roller coaster rests in the Atlantic Ocean.

The soul of this community is beaten down, but must be rebuilt, said Mayor Bill Akers. This coastal community relies on tourism dollars to keep going.

The recovery process is daunting, but not impossible, said the police chief.

For now a mandatory curfew remains in place and residents can only be here during the day.

During our trip, we saw mostly business owners clearing debris.
