DC Veterans want representation at official Veteran's Day ceremonies

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

On this Veteran's Day we honor all of those who have served in the military. But some veterans who call the District home say they don't get the same respect as veterans who are from the 50 states of America. For one, there is no representation in Congress.

DC officials held a special service at the DC War Memorial to bring attention to an issue that has been raised by a fourth generation resident recently.

Tomi Ruckers says she was disappointed when she attended a Navy boot camp graduation ceremony for her son Jonathan Rucker earlier this year in Illinois. Ruckers say during the ceremony all state flags were displayed and recognition was given to those graduates from those state. She says the District flag was not displayed and there were no cheers for those representing the District of Columbia

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is asking her colleagues in Congress and President Obama to approve a measure which would require the District of Columbia flag be displayed when all of the other 50 state flags are displayed at official ceremonies.
