The Bush tax cuts are set to expire in just 51 days, and that means the clock is ticking for Congress to decide on a 2013 fiscal plan. But can Republicans and Democrats come to an agreement in time?
When the Bush tax cuts expire on January 1, it could set off a chain of economic problems that some say would throw America off a fiscal cliff. President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner have both said they're willing to compromise, but they remain headstrong on their views on tax reform.
If Congress doesn't reach an agreement, middle-class Americans could see a $2,000 increase in their taxes. The unemployment rate could jump back up to over 9%--- potentially leading the country into another recession. Barrons says over 1,000 government programs--- including the defense budget and Medicare—would experience "deep, automatic cuts."
