Game Preview: Texans at Bears

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX Chicago Sports Analyst Tom Waddle previews Sunday night's matchup between the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans.

Offense

It certainly wasn't perfect, but we did see progress last week. A 100 yard rusher, a 100 yard receiver, 3 touchdowns and zero interceptions from our quarterback. That's progress. More improvement is gonna be necessary to beat the Houston Texans. The heat will be on, so I'm hoping for a heavy dose of Matt Forte, runs and screens and lots of Jay Cutler outside the pocket.

The Texans provide a perfect model. They are a run first team, thanks to the presence of Arian Foster. Foster ranks fifth in the league in rushing, but is averaging just 4 yards per carry. The commitment to the running game leads to the best play action passing attack in the NFL. Matt Schaub executes play action to perfection using tight ends and crossing routes. Owen Daniels headlines a talented group of tight ends while Andre Johnson is still capable of big plays. The offensive line has allowed just 10 sacks this year.

The Texans get the edge on offense.

Defense

The big play production of this Chicago Bears defense has no equal. Twenty-five sacks, a league high 28 takeaways, and 7 defensive touchdowns. It's hard to believe they can keep this up, but there's also no signs of slowing. Charles 'Peanut' Tillman is the front runner for Defensive Player of the Year, and Brian Urlacher looks healthier and is now part of the beat downs administered to opponents on a weekly basis.

Peanut's biggest competition for the leagues top defensive honor is J.J Watt. He's the Texan wearing number 99 and playing like the hall of famer that wore the same number in burnt orange and navy blue. Watt leads the league with 10.5 sacks and 10 batted balls. He anchors the best front seven the Bears have seen this year. These Texans are solid at every level allowing just 286 yards and 17 points per game.

Even so, the Bears get the edge on defense.

Special Teams

It's nice to welcome Dave Toub's guys to the party. It took longer than anticipated, but last week should be the beginning of more "special" plays.

The Bears get the special teams edge.

Intangibles

What a matchup between two of the best the NFL has to offer. The Texans are the most balanced team the Bears have faced this year, on both sides of the football. After weeks of facing inferior opponents, Lovie's guys haven't been tested like this since the Week 2 mistake in Green Bay. Not only are the Texans talented, they are very disciplined, having committed a league low 6 turnovers. So, tough game to pick.

And when I find myself in a prognosticating bind, I lean on old reliable: "time and place." These Bears have won six straight and are brimming with confidence. They return to Soldier Field where the fan support, non-controlled climate, and home field advantage can make all the difference in the world. Settle in for a heavyweight bout. It will go the distance.

Prediction

Bears 20, Texans 17
