Gov. Christie suspends Blue Laws due to Hurricane Sandy

A state judge rules that Bergen County, New Jersey's shopping ban known as the "Blue Laws" will be suspended on Sunday.

Governor Christie had temporarily suspended the blue laws earlier in the week hoping it would help in the recovery from Sandy.

Governor Christie unsuccessfully tried to repeal the blue laws all together, so some are worried that that's what's happening here. While some like the law, others don't.

One thing that's certain, the Blue Laws are causing quite a controversy.

Traffic in Paramus has become a way of life thanks to several malls and numerous other stores. On Sunday's though, traffic used to be non-existent.

That is until Governor Christie suspended Blue Laws which ban retail shopping.

"I think they should be abolished they're part of the old church. I'm tired of having to do everything on Saturday," said one frustrated shopper.

Christie lifted Blue Laws in Bergen County last week to help residents recover from Hurricane Sandy. But in Paramus where the laws are stricter than the county rules, officials there challenged the directive -- they want the Blue laws back.

"Every single day it's like this. There's no traffic here – put them back into place as soon as possible," added another shopper.

The laws, which prevent the sale of goods like clothing, furniture and building materials on Sunday's, have become a hot topic lately. While some clearly have strong opinions on the Blue Laws, most people say they are torn.

The Bergen County Executive has said she wants to lift the ban on Blue Laws. Governor Christie said he would abide by that and all of this could happen sometime next week.
