NJ police criticize JCP&L's response

Posted: Updated:

VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Police in a northern New Jersey town are criticizing Jersey Central Power & Light for failing to respond when three men became trapped in a van.

Vernon Township police called the utility because officers believed dangerous power lines were dangling overhead.

Police Lt. Randy Mills tells The Star-Ledger it wasn't a good sign when the JCP&L operator initially asked police what state they were calling from.

The utility's parent company is based in Ohio.

Utility workers never came so police rescued the men after waiting a half hour. The wires turned out to be harmless telephone lines.

JCP&L says the call will be reviewed to see if procedures were followed.
