Columbia, Md. firm sending hurricane relief supplies to NY, NJ Sandy victims

COLUMBIA, Md. -

An architecture firm in Columbia, Md. that is known for building communities has now taken on a project to rebuild some in New York and New Jersey.

They are loading up a giant truck with relief supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Vickie Thurston, who works at Waldon Studio, got the idea of loading up a truck with supplies after watching news reports about how the storm impacted people up north.

It is the same feeling she had after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.

"My son and I went to gut houses there and saw how devastating it can be to people and I thought I got to do something," Thurston says.

Her boss, Ravi Waldon, didn't hesitate to rent a truck for the mission.

"She said, ‘Can we do this?' And all I did was say, ‘Okay,"' says Waldon. "I think it shows the power of what one person's idea can do."

Deborah Hofman actually made two trips to drop off supplies.

"I want to help out," Hofman says. "My heart and prayers are with them."

Helping out is in Thurston's blood. The mother of four and grandmother of two has been to Guatemala twice recently on missions to rebuild communities there.

On Monday, she will be ushering this truck load of relief supplies to a distribution center in Brooklyn thanks to the generosity of people in our area.

"What I love is seeing how something like this brings people together," says Thurston.

The collection will continue through 7 p.m. Friday outside Waldon Studio Architects at 6325 Woodside Court in Columbia near the DMV.

You can call 410-290-9680 if you need more information about a donation.
