LIRR: limited service; evening commute to be easier

The MTA resumed modified service on all lines of the Long Island Rail Road except the Long Beach Branch Thursday after weather related delays and suspensions overnight.
Commuters were told to anticipate extensive delays and cancellations due to reduced train capacity in the East River tunnels.
By the afternoon, delays were of up to 15 minutes system-wide.
The evening commute was expected to be easier than the day before when the entire system shut down because of multiple problems caused by the nor'easter: downed power lines, fallen trees on tracks, signal problems, and other problems.
Penn Station was temporarily closed due to overcrowding. Commuters were greeted with gates across entrances to the LIRR area of the building.
Some people were forced to take shelter overnight in a Long Island bar because they had nowhere to go during the suspension.
@LIRRScoop, one of the official Twitter accounts of the Long Island Rail Road, reported problems Thursday with station signs due to weather related issues. The Tweet advised commuters to listen for station announcements for train information.
The nor'easter, coming just over a week after Superstorm Sandy, was dumped several inches of snow on the region already dealing with flood damage, power outages, and lack of heating.
Two of Amtrak's four East River tunnels remain out of service due to flooding associated with Superstorm Sandy.
