Gas consumers who have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy are frustrated trying to find where gasoline is available for their vehicles and generators.
Developers have put together GasBuddy, an innovative way to track where gasoline is available.
The tool is immediately available for those in the affected regions by visiting gasbuddy.com/sandy from a web browser via desktop or mobile phone connection. Due to the approval process for smartphone apps, this tool will be web-based only at this time, but GasBuddy is looking into ways to permanently have such a feature in its smartphone apps as well.
GasBuddy spotters in the region are urged to update the fuel availability information so that motorists looking for gasoline can find it. GasBuddy is also working with some gas stations to keep their information updated, but as word gets out about the new tool, use and reporting will likely continue to increase.
GasBuddy operates NewYorkGasPrices.com and over 250 similar web sites that track gasoline prices at over 140,000 gasoline stations in the United States and Canada. In addition, GasBuddy offers a free smartphone app which has been downloaded over 20 million times to help motorists find gasoline prices in their area. In New York City, GasBuddy tracks price changes at 1,088 retail outlets.
