Many residents in the hard-hit area of Belmar, NJ, the goal of many without power is to simply stay warm.

Hurricane Sandy wiped out many homes and forced their occupants to move to nearby hotels.

In the ocean front community of Belmar, flooding is still a concern. Power is out, residents literally crowding around fireplaces just to stay warm.

A night's stay at the Belmar Inn comes with complimentary access to the fireplace. You have residents without power in this community and crews scrambling to pump water from flooded streets.

Tom Volger opened his doors to a few volunteers who needed a place to stay.

"We all pitch in the way we can –how could we not do our part?" said Volger, the Inn's owner.

Next door Ken Sullivan and Mike Carroll are standing next to a piece of boardwalk that floated nearly two blocks from the Atlantic and ended up in the backyard.

"We used it to float on and rescue people," said Sullivan. "It was kind of like a Tom Sawyer situation."

There are signs of hope. Dozens of volunteers are in Wall Township having come together and have already served more than 10,000 people.

"The outpouring of support is incredible and they all came to help others," said Capt. Ralph Addonizio, from the Wall Community First Aid Squad.

For more than 12 hours, these volunteers also served hot meals, distributed pallets worth of supplies.

Katie Hamilton says she plans to do it all over again on Sunday. She knows there are many more who need help.

"The people are very thankful -- a lot of people have lost everything."
