Supporters rally for charter schools amendment

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Supporters of the proposed charter school amendment rallied on Friday at the State Capitol. They pushed for passage of the constitutional amendment that could expand the number of charter schools.

Supporters gathered at King's Chapel at Morehouse College on Friday to begin a march in support of charter schools and other education opportunities.

The march ended at the State Capitol where the supporters heard lawmakers who back the amendment to the state's constitution. If passed, the measure would give the state more authority to create and fund public charter schools over the objection of local school systems.

"It's not fair low income students don't get the same opportunities to a high quality education as their middle and high income counterparts. So we believe there should be high quality public schools tuition options for these students," said supporter Alana Moore.

Opponents of the amendment are working hard to defeat it with warnings the change would mean fewer resources for remaining public schools.

"When people get educated on the details of the issue and don't get the distortions from these kind of events, what you'll find is people will vote against it," said Ga. State Senator Vincent Fort, who opposes the amendment.

Both sides will continue working on this issue on this final day for early voting in Georgia, and then through the weekend, leading up to Election Day on Tuesday.
